A man accused of shooting two Macomb police officers could stand trial later this month.
Shaiking Mathis, now 40, faces multiple charges of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm for the shooting in 2024.
Earlier this year, charges of criminal sexual assault were filed against Mathis in a separate case.
Defense attorney Michael Jarard told Judge Heidi Benson on Tuesday that the cases are interrelated and he needs more time to prepare.
But Judge Benson said the shooting case is nearly two years old. “It’s time for it to come to a resolution,” she said.
A final pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 19. The trial could begin the following week.
Police were sent to a home in the 300 block of North Normal Street on Sept. 4, 2024 to investigate a reported sexual assault.
Police said they announced their presence multiple times before entering. They were then shot from inside the house.
A 20-hour standoff ensued before Mathis surrendered.
Both officers have recovered from their wounds.
