The Macomb Board of Education voted 6-to-0 on Monday night to part ways with Journey12 , the company that produced the quarterly Flight Path magazine about the district’s students, staff, and alumni.
“It’s time to go in a different direction,” said board member Justice Keene.
The board hired St. Louis-based Journey12 in June 2024 to produce the quarterly magazine. The two-year contract paid the firm $90,000 per year. It was funded with title grants and local advertising, according to Superintendent Patrick Twomey.
Board member Robin Severs felt the company did not deliver everything expected, and the board’s Nate McGraw said there did not seem to be community support for the magazine.
McGraw said for every person he heard from who liked the publication, there were three who didn’t care for it.
Twomey concurred.
“I think the board gave the community the option to speak, and we just received a lot more against it than we did for it. I think that was reflected in the vote tonight with a unanimous decision to end that contract,” Twomey said.
The Community News Brief has pitched the idea of creating a locally-produced magazine for the district.
The board could consider that proposal at a later date.
