A McDonough County jury found a man guilty of shooting two Macomb police officers two years ago.
The verdict against Shaiking Mathis, who’s now 40, was announced late Thursday afternoon.
Investigators did not recover the weapon used in the shooting, but First Assistant State’s Attorney Susan Maxwell said the evidence against Mathis was still strong, leading to the conviction.
“I think that the circumstantial evidence in this case was absolutely overwhelming. The evidence received by the jury showed that the defendant was the only one in his house from the time that the officers were shot on until the time that he surrendered to law enforcement 19 hours later,” she said.
The jury found Mathis guilty of all eight counts against him in the shooting. Those charges include aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Sentencing is scheduled for early November.
The shooting happened at a house on North Normal Street on Sept. 4, 2024. Police were called there to investigate a reported sexual assault.
Police say they announced their presence multiple times before entering. They were then shot from inside the house.
Both officers who were shot have recovered.
Mathis is also charged separately with two counts of criminal sexual assault. That case has not gone to trial.
