Watson Trial is Delayed

The trial of former Macomb High School teacher and boys basketball coach Daniel Watson will not take place until the last week of May. He is charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and a count of official misconduct related to an alleged relationship with a student who was 17 years old at the time. He faces another charge of official misconduct for alleged public indecency on school grounds.

Defense attorney Scott Terry asked for the continuance. He said the defense received over 1,000 pages of documents from late in the discovery process involving e-mails and texts between Watson and the alleged victim. Terry said the defense needs more time to examine the documents.

Judge Raymond Cavanaugh granted the continuance.

He rejected a defense request for information on the specific dates the incidents occurred. He said the incidents are alleged to have occurred in conjunction with high school events so the dates can be established.

Watson was arrested in August of last year on the original charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The two charges of official misconduct were added earlier this month.

Watson has pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

His next hearing is May 15th.
