The annual 64 Arts national juried exhibit drew entries from across the nation -- and even a couple from other countries.
The exhibit includes 132 works by 78 artists. One of those artists is from Canada and another is from Italy. Buchanan Center Director Susan Twomey said western Illinois is also represented.
“We have some people from Macomb. We have someone from Galesburg. We have three or four artists right from the Monmouth area who all got work accepted into the show,” Twomey said.
“It's a blind process so the juror has no idea who these people are or where they're from. So I think that speaks volumes for the type of quality artists that we have right here at home.”
The juror for the show is figurative painter and sculptor Eric Fischl of Long Island, NY. Twomey said Fischl has works hanging in museums around the world. Fischl is promoting a national initiative called “America: Now and Here,” which was used to serve as a loose theme for this year's 64 Arts exhibit.
“And that's what I would like them (exhibit visitors) to do. To look at it in a way that may cause them to step back and reflect and then start a conversation about America and who we are right here and now,” Twomey said.
The 64 Arts exhibit will remain on display through October 13 at the Buchanan Center for the Arts, 64 Public Square, Monmouth. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 7, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Fischl is expected to attend.
