The Keokuk City Council is finalizing the details for its second urban deer season.
2nd Ward Alderman Mike Moore says the city’s first attempt was rather successful. About 40 bow-hunters harvested 40 deer.
Moore says the Iowa DNR did not expect Keokuk to reach those levels during the first year of hosting an urban deer season.
This year’s season runs from October 1 through mid-January.
Moore says a few issues must be resolved before the season begins.
He says the list includes whether city land should be open to hunters, who should receive the tags for bucks, and whether the 18-year-old age limit should be dropped.
Moore believes the younger hunters would be mature enough to realize that if they do something wrong, they will not be allowed to continue.
Hunters will again have to pass a proficiency test to participate.
The tests are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 (9:00 A.M.), Tuesday, Sept. 18 (5:30 P.M.) and Saturday, Sept. 22 (9:00 A.M.).
