Macomb Parks Plan Under Review

Rich Egger

Just about everything will be on the table as the Macomb Park Board reviews the district's long-range plan.

Park District Executive Director Ray Peterson believes the only exception should be the plan for completing Veteran's Park. The 80-acre park will will include all of the district's soccer fields and baseball and softball diamonds when it's completed.

“That is a sound concept verified by the independent firm that came down and did an assessment as well as a pattern nationwide to consolidate that type of activity,” Peterson said.

The review of the long-range plan is being done because the park board has several new members, plus several years have passed since the current plan was created.

The current plan recommends construction of a community recreation center at Downing Park. The building would also house the district's administrative offices. An outdoor water play area -- such as a spray ground -- would also be built at Downing.

The plan recommended removing ball fields from Patton Park and converting it to a place for activities such as disc golf. The restrooms would be reconstructed and the road from Fisk Street to Grant Street would be closed as a through street.

Other park district properties were also analyzed but it was determined none of them required significant changes.
