DCI Investigates Van Buren County Shooting

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) continues to look into an officer-involved shooting in Van Buren County Tuesday morning.

Two deputies with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of a man wearing military gear and carrying a rifle walking along Highway 2 near Cantril.

The reports said Robert Dooley, 59, was making obscene gestures towards passing vehicles.

The DCI says the deputies approached Dooley and told him to drop his weapon.

Dooley instead raised his weapon towards the deputies, which prompted Deputy Jon Tharp to fire one shot that killed Dooley.

An autopsy by the State Medical Examiner’s Office says the cause of death was a single gunshot wound.

The DCI says it will submit its findings to the Van Bren County Attorney’s Office.
