A Knox College student died after a hit and run accident over the weekend in Galesburg.
Police report Sekinat Olamitundun Lawani was struck as she crossed South Street early Sunday morning. Lawani was taken to Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say witnesses provided a description of the hit and run vehicle, which an officer spotted on Day Street about three hours later. The owner of the vehicle, Lakeesha Smith of 1595 McKnight Street Galesburg, was later located by officers at her home.
Smith, age 33, was arrested and charged with failure to report accident/death, failure to reduce speed to avoid accident, registration expired, operation of uninsured vehicle, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
