Des Moines County Flood Buyout Nearly Over

Des Moines County is close to completing a project that is more than four years in the making.

Regional Planner Dan Eberhardt says 19 structures in the northeast corner of the county had to be addressed after the devastating flood of 2008.

He says about 2/3 of them have already been demolished, with the remaining 6 in Huron Township to be taken down within the next few weeks.

The lots are as large as three acres.

The remaining demolition projects would complete the county’s buyout program.

Eberhardt says the vacant lots in Huron Township that are outside of the 100-year flood plain can be sold for future use.

He says the county will have to keep the lots that are inside the 100-year flood plain.

Eberhardt says FEMA is taking a second look at the flood plain map developed last year for that area as part of a levee certification process.

The total cost to Des Moines County has been about $1.3-million.
