Tax Approved, Denied in Van Buren County

The final prices of everyday items and services will be changing in Van Buren County after this week’s election.

Voters in Birmingham have approved the creation of a 1% local option sales and services tax, effective July 1, 2013.

The revenue from the tax can be used for any lawful purpose of the city, with an emphasis on community betterment.

Auditor Jon Finney says Birmingham was the last incorporated city in the county to adopt the tax.

At the same time, voters rejected the continuation of the same tax in un-incorporated Van Buren County.

Finney says that means businesses outside of city limits will stop charging the tax after June 30.
