NCLHS Expects Busy Season

The North Lee County Historical Society is anticipating a busy holiday season now that its downtown museums are back open for business.

The organization has called the old AT&SF Depot Complex home for about 40 years.

The NCHLS had to move out, though, while the city elevated and renovated the three brick buildings in Riverview Park.

President Andy Andrews says the Historical Society was able to return to the complex more than one month ago.

He expects even more traffic over the next two months with people being home for the holidays and wanting to see the improvements first-hand.

The NCLHS is using the entire complex, plus the nearby CB&Q Depot, which was the organization’s home during construction.

Andrews says the complex has the same feel to it, even after all of the work.

Meanwhile, the final phase of the improvements to the AT&SF Depot Complex is expected to get underway soon.

The city council has accepted phases 2 and 3 of the project from the contractors, which consisted of the interior and exterior work.

City Manager Byron Smith says the fourth phase is the construction of an elevated platform, which is needed before Amtrak can relocate to the complex.

The platform must be high enough to meet recent federal regulations regarding accessibility.

Smith says construction should get underway in the spring.  He says the project could cost about $500,000, with Amtrak helping with some of the cost.
