Macomb Ready for Round Two of Fix or Flatten

Rich Egger

A city memo said the Macomb Community Development Office and the City Attorney Office have provided aldermen with another list of private properties to consider for the “Fix or Flatten” program.

Under the program, the city acquires and demolishes dilapidated buildings unless the owners act to bring them up to code.

City Attorney Kristen Petrie told aldermen the initial “Fix or Flatten” program this year spurred some property owners into fixing or tearing down structures before the city stepped in.

“We have actually had several that were on a list and we have been starting to communicate with regarding condition that have taken the task voluntarily,” Petrie said.

In the memo, City Administrator Dean Torreson projected the next round will cost less than $30,000. He wrote the city has money available to get the work done this fiscal year, which continues through April 30.

The city is considering roughly half-a-dozen properties for the next round of the program, though the properties are still being discussed so the locations have not yet been released.
