Organizers are putting the final touches on this year’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Fort Madison and they are in need of a key component.
Committee Chairperson Sarah Cantrell says there is a need for desserts.
“The things that you can hopefully pick up quickly at your local grocery store,” says Cantrell, “brownies, pies, cakes, cookies. We are looking for any of those filler things, but our goal is to have about 50 more pies.”
The desserts can be dropped off while volunteers are present at the new Fort Madison Middle School on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
The dinner will take place there on Thursday, Nov. 22 from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.
The Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Fort Madison was revived in 2010. It is free to the public, which includes those who are in need or those who do not want to cook.
Cantrell says the number of meals served jumped from about 450 in 2010 to more than 500 last year. She expects to serve at least 800 meals this year, with pick-up and delivery available.
Cantrell says the increase is anticipated due to the recent layoffs at Siemens Energy’s plant in Fort Madison.
She says delivery and carry-out orders can be placed by calling 319-561-0191.
Cantrell says there will also be a family-friendly movie offered for people who are dining in.
