New Burlington Fire Chief

The Burlington City Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Matt Trexel as the city’s new fire chief.

Trexel has been with the Burlington Fire Department for more than 15-years.

He was promoted from Battalion Chief to interim Fire Chief following the demotion of Tom Clements several months ago.

Trexel said he is eager to assume control of the department.

“I have got a lot of plans and I enjoy my job,” said Trexel.  “I look forward to coming to work everyday and I work with a lot of great people.”

Trexel initially turned down the job because he felt the salary offer of $77,000 was too low.

City Manager Jim Ferneau says the two sides have since settled on an annual salary of $79,000, which would increase to $81,000 on July 1, 2013.  He says Trexel would also be in line for a percentage raise, currently projected at 2%.

Trexel took the oath of office following the city council vote.
