West Burlington Schools Consider Tablets

Students in the West Burlington School District could get their hands on some new technology next year.

The district’s technology committee is recommending the purchase of electronic tablets for students and teachers.

Superintendent Dave Schmitt says the district would go with the KUNO brand because they would provide internet access for students without it at home.

He says the plan calls for West Burlington’s teachers to receive their tablets this spring and for the students to get them in the fall.

Schmitt says students at the junior high school and high school would be able to take them home while the devices for elementary age student would remain at school at all times.

The school board is scheduled to vote next month on the purchase of the tablets.  It is expected to cost $550,000 for 800 devices plus insurance and accessories.

Schmitt says he does not know whether there will be a fee assessed to students.
