SCC to Add Mobile Unit to Keokuk Campus

Southeastern Community College can proceed with a temporary expansion of its Keokuk campus.

The Keokuk Board of Adjustment has granted the college a special use permit to place a mobile classroom behind the main complex.

Vice President David Schachtsiek says the nearly 1,700 square foot structure is needed to deal with a shortage of space.

“We are just growing quicker than we anticipated,” says Schachtsiek.  “We see (this) as a very positive thing for Keokuk.”

Schachtsiek says the mobile classroom would only be needed for about three years.

He says the college plans to build something permanent by then to house science labs and vocational technology.

The Keokuk Board of Adjustment placed two conditions on the special use permit.

The classroom must be connected to the college’s alarm system, per Keokuk Fire Chief Gabe Rose, and the college must come back to the board if the mobile classroom is needed beyond three years.

Schachtsiek says the structure is currently set up at Keokuk High School.  He says SCC has already secured its use.

Meanwhile, the board has also given SCC permission to replace the college’s informational sign that sits along Messenger Road.

The only requirement is that the new sign be no larger than the current sign.

SCC President Michael Ash has said one of his goals is to improve the college’s image and appearance, starting with new signage.

Schachtsiek says the college is already seeking bids for the sign.
