Canton, MO Lands Sidewalk Grant

A northeast Missouri city will get some help in improving accessibility.

Canton has secured roughly $230,000 through the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program.

Mayor Jarod Phillips says the city will install or replace about 13 blocks of sidewalk from the intersection of 7th and Nesmith to Canton High School.

He says this is a great opportunity to bring tax dollars back to northeast Missouri.

Crews will also build about 30 wheelchair ramps at the intersections along the route.

Phillips says the grant will cover the entire cost of the project.

He hopes construction can get underway this year.

Phillips says the route was determined by foot traffic and by the proximity of locations where children stop before or after school.
