SCC Adds New Industrial Program

A new program through Southeastern Community College aims to address a growing need for local manufacturers.

Dennis Hinkle with SCC’s Center for Business says more companies are advertising for people who can maintain their industrial machinery and heavy equipment.

He says that prompted the college to partner with Roquette America on a ten-week, industrial operations maintenance skills training program.

The company put $250,000 towards equipment and curriculum, which will be overseen by SCC.

Instructor Dave Rector says participants will leave the program with a base knowledge that can be applied to equipment owned by any manufacturer.

He says some of the specifics that will be covered include basic electrical and mathematics.

Dominique Taret with Roquette America says the company is looking to its future.

“Roquette’s intention is to build a reliable base for future growth with new partners and new products,” says Taret.  “Our community needs to be able to offer the right resources to attract new partners.  We are continually investing in plant expansions, improvements and modernizations, but this is only half of the equation.  We also need to have a skilled workforce to be successful and grow.”

The first session is expected to get underway in a couple of weeks with up to 12 participants.  People interested in the course are encouraged to call the Center for Business at 319-208-5375.

Dennis Hinkle says those who complete the course receive a certificate.

“Manufacturers hiring certificate holders can do so knowing they will have a skills base that will enable them to get up to speed quickly,” says Hinkle.  “It will really lower the risk and cost of hiring.”

SCC also offers a more detailed industrial maintenance technology program.
