Keokuk Awards Grand Avenue Contract

It appears Keokuk is getting a good deal on a multi-million dollar street project.

The city council has awarded the contract to rebuild Grand Avenue, from Rand Park to Sutton Park, to Shipley Contracting Company.

The firm out of Burlington submitted the lowest of five bids at roughly $3.4-million.

In fact, the bid came in about $650,000 less than the next lowest bid.

Mayor Tom Marion says the city is not worried about the discrepancy.

“Well… we have talked about that,” says Marion.  “So far, no problems.  We have the contract prepared and the contractor appears to be happy and satisfied, so it is just one of those things.”

Engineers estimated the project would cost about $3.9-million.

Construction is expected to get underway in early April.

Public Works Director Mark Bousselot says the street will be rebuilt to a uniform width of 44’.

The city plans to borrow more than $4-million for the project.

Finance Sub-Committee Chairman Roger Bryant says the extra money will go towards other street projects throughout Keokuk.
