The Iowa State Penitentiary says Mark Gear, 44, assaulted a staff member in the medical care unit at 7:00 A.M. on Friday, May 24.

The unidentified nurse was treated for injuries to the arm and face at Fort Madison Community Hospital before bring released.

Gear is currently serving time for attempted murder and assault causing injury.

The prison says the results of an internal investigation have been given to the Lee County Attorney's office for possible criminal charges.


The rental fees for the Rand Park Pavilion in Keokuk are now official.

The city council has adopted them after initially delaying a vote so the Rand Park Pavilion Commission’s financial records could be renewed.
The commission established the fees several years ago,     without the fees being presented to the city council first.


Financial assistance is available for people interested in building or rehabilitating single family homes in southeast Iowa.

The Great River Housing Trust Fund says eight homes will be funded this year.  Each can receive up to $25,000.

The homes must be built or rehabbed in Lee, Des Moines, Henry or Louisa Counties.

They must also be sold to or rented to low-to-moderate income families.

The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is accepting applications for the grant program.


Keokuk will contribute $10,000 To the planned celebration for the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Keokuk Dam and Powerhouse.

Organizers initially requested $25,000, but the city council settled on the $10,000 figure.

They expect tens of thousands of people to attend the celebration in late June.
