Arrests Made in Fort Madison Shooting

The Fort Madison Police Department has arrested three Burlington residents in connection with a shooting, Monday afternoon, near Lincoln Elementary School.

Paul Wilkins Jr., 22, has been charged with two felonies: Attempt to Commit Murder and Robbery 1st Degree.

The other two, Heather Mears, 23, and Terrell Wilson, 20, each face one count of felony aiding and abetting Robbery 1st Degree.

Fort Madison Police Chief Bruce Niggemeyer says officers found Matthew Griffiths, 25, of Fort Madison laying in an alley about a block from the school.

Griffiths was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

He was taken to Fort Madison Community Health Center before being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he is being treated and recovering from his injuries.

Niggemeyer says witnesses saw a silver car leave the area after hearing the gunshot.

He would not comment on a possible motive for the shooting or what connection the three had to the silver car.

Mears and Wilson are being housed in the Lee County Jail while Wilkins is in the Des Moines County Jail.
