A quick look at news from around the tri-state region.

The Burlington Police Department has arrested three Burlington residents for passing fraudulently issued payroll checks in Burlington, Mount Pleasant and the Quad Cities.

Dabrielle Dixon, 20, of 218 Hayes, Demone Head, 24, of 2306 Washington, & Andre Kindrick, 24, of 2306 Washington allegedly obtained more than $7,500 in Burlington alone.

The department says other suspects are being pursued with additional arrests expected.

The SCC Board of Trustees has capped the college's upcoming budget at around $48-million and increased the property tax rate for next year by about $0.02 to about $1.03.

Vice President of Administrative Services, Kevin Carr, says the college will spend about $10-million more next year on training for local industries and improvements to the Keokuk and West Burlington campuses.

He says the spending plan is more "big picture" at this point because the departmental budgets will be set this summer.

A public hearing on SCC's preliminary budget is scheduled for Monday, March 10.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) says one of its agents acted appropriately when he fired three shots at a suspected car thief in Burlington.

James Jenkins responded to a report of someone breaking into vehicles in the parking garage of Catfish Bend Casino on February 12.

The DCI says Jenkins intended to protect himself and others when he shot at a stolen vehicle being driven at him by David Cross.

Cross, 40, of Burlington faces multiple charges in connection with the incident.

The West Burlington School District will not be hiring a school resource officer.

Superintendent Dave Schmitt says the district and the city could not agree on how to split the cost of the new employee, so for the time being, the discussion is on the “back-burner.”

Schmitt says the two sides will apply for a federal grant that would cover much of the cost of a new school resource officer.
