SOUTHEAST IOWA
The filing period for county office in Iowa is now open and several local candidates showed up with papers in hand on day 1.
In Lee County, it was Recorder Nancy Booten and Becky Gaylord, who is running for County Treasurer while Des Moines County, Debra Moore made her campaign for treasurer official.
Four Van Buren County residents filed papers to run for county office.
They are Supervisors Ted Nixon and Mark Meek, Recorder Ann Skaggs and Stacey Reese, who is running for County Treasurer.
The filing period for county office ends Wednesday, March 26.
DES MOINES COUNTY, IA
Des Moines County plans to get rid of some public records it has been holding for years.
The county says a change in state law allows for the destruction of bids for projects completed at least ten years prior.
The county auditor’s office will review each bid for historic significance.
A list of bids to destroy will eventually be presented to the Des Moines County Board of Supervisors for approval.
WEST BURLINGTON, IA
The Southeastern Community College Foundation says it has more than $200,000 available for students planning to enroll in the fall.
The organization says more than 300 scholarships will be awarded.
They are expected to range in value from $150 to full tuition/books.
Online applications are due April 1, 2014.
VAN BUREN COUNTY, IA
The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors has authorized the placement of liens on several Mount Sterling properties over late sewer bills.
Auditor Jon Finney says the property owners are more than 60 days behind on their bills (in excess of $5,000).
The county assumed responsibility for the sewer system after Mount Sterling chose to discontinue its government more than one year ago.
