Macomb City Council Delays Vote on Pay Raises

Curtis Bisbee

The proposed 2.5 percent pay raise for mayor, city clerk and city treasurer reflects the salary increase the rest of nonunion staff and management received this year to match the negotiated pay for union employees at city hall.

A vote on whether to increase the salary for those 3 elected positions at Macomb City Hall has been delayed after Alderman at Large Dennis Moon noted that the representatives in the elected positions eligible for the increase are also the same as those involved in the union negotiations.

“I would like us to take a look at the total compensation package for each office individually," said Moon. "I believe we could be making a mistake if we tie elected officials salary to wage increases received by nonunion and management employees whose increases have been historically based on our union contract. The elected officials participate in those negotiations I think we are going down a slippery slope there.”

The nonunion and union staff usually receive annual salary increases. None of the 3 elected positions being considered have received a pay raise in more than a decade.

If approved by the city council, the raise would go in effect May of 2015.
