Des Moines County Attorney Stepping Down

Des Moines County

Des Moines County will soon be in need of a lead prosecutor as County Attorney Pat Jackson's last official day on the job will be Monday, June 30.

Jackson wrote, in a three sentence resignation letter dated June 15, that he planned to retire when his current term expired at the end of the year, but he will be stepping down early for medical reasons.

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors could accept Jackson’s resignation this week.

Attorney Toby Gordon represents the county on labor and personnel matters.

He says once the resignation is accepted, it is up to the board to post the vacancy and accept applications from interested people for at least 10 days.

From there, the board will appoint someone to serve until the November election.

Jackson has been on paid leave since early April.  He provided a letter at the time to County Auditor Carol Copeland, but she has not released it citing confidentiality.

Assistant County Attorney Amy Beavers has been serving as Acting County Attorney since Jackson took leave.

She is running for the position in November as a Democrat against Republican Trent Henkelvig.
