Fort Madison Exiting Volunteer Program

Fort Madison plans to gradually separate itself from a volunteer program.

The city council has decided not to seek outside funding to help pay for RSVP beyond the current fiscal year.

RSVP is a clearinghouse for seniors who want to volunteer throughout the community.

City Manager Byron Smith said there is enough money in the budget to fund the program through the end of June, including its one employee, so Fort Madison is actively seeking a new home for the program after that.

“There have been some discussions with the (Fort Madison) United Way," Smith said.  "Those are going to continue to try to come up with some way to help them transition into the grant so that they can do it going forward.”

He said several other non-profit organizations have also expressed an interest in taking on a leadership role with the program.

Smith said the city would be willing to provide some transitional funding, as long as the long-term expenses are removed.
