Free Little Library Open In Macomb

TSPR's Emily Boyer

The McDonough County YMCA is the site of a new "free little library." The shelves will house mostly children’s book.

The free little library was made possible by Western Illinois University students associated with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

WIU English Professor Rebekah Buchanan said free little libraries are part of a national effort to get literacy into communities.

“What they wanted to do was get libraries in places that sort of everybody has access to -- not take over a traditional library but to help support that library,” Buchanan said.

Free little libraries operate on a "give a book, take a book" system. But, Buchanan said the Friends of the Macomb Public Library offered to help stock the shelves if needed.

The stand is registered with the organization of Free Little Libraries. That will put the site on the national map.
