An organization working to build an accessible playground in Keokuk said it's on-track to meet a significant fundraising goal.
The Keokuk Playgrounds for All (KPLAY) Committee has been working for months to raise money for equipment that can be used by all children, including those with physical disabilities.
Organizer Joe Lisieski said many times, children become isolated if they cannot play and interact with their peers. He said that is why KPLAY is working to build an interactive playground in Tolmie Park over the next few years.
Stage one is the construction of an accessible swing-set and music play station.
Lisieski said thanks to a $10,000 donation from Keokuk Rotary this month, that project is on track to be completed by June.
"We're 70%, by current count, toward completing stage one. That means between now and say the end of March, we are still looking to raise $8,000-$9,000."
Lisieski said state two is a larger, more extensive playground, also in Tolmie Park, which is located near the city's aquatics center and skate park.
He said KPLAY is still in the running for a $15,000 grant through a national, non-profit organization known as KaBOOM!.
