Karlin Declares Candidacy for State's Attorney

T.J. Carson
Galesburg 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin will run as a Democrat in the March primary for Knox County State's Attorney.

A Galesburg alderman is promising a better qualify life and enhanced public safety as he launches a campaign to be Knox County State's Attorney.  Jeremy Karlin announced his candidacy in front of around 25 supporters outsie the Knox County Courthouse.

Karlin has experience in the office, previously serving as an Assistant State’s Attorney. He said he was compelled to run for the top position after talking to people through face-to-face discussions and two surveys. He said the feedback showed a distrust and lack of confidence in the criminal justice system.

“People said they felt unsafe walking down the street or going downtown at night. Or even going to parks with their children,” Karlin said.

Karlin said he wants to develop crime prevention strategies with a variety of entities in the county, including schools, churches, law enforcement, and businesses.

Karlin also said he would be tougher on violent offenders.

“I’ll oppose probation for those convicted of gun crimes. I’ll focus on people who commit burglary and residential burglary. The frequent break-ins to our cars and our homes have eroded our community’s sense of security and safety. And I’ll support tougher sentences for repeat offenders,” Karlin said.

Karlin said he would also use the office to develop youth programs to steer children away from crime by increasing opportunities for them.
