Moffitt to Leave Illinois Legislature

T.J. Carson
Don Moffitt says he wants to spend more time with his family after serving for 23 years in the Illinois House.

Don Moffitt first served west-central Illinois in Springfield in 1993.  Now he's calling it a career after his 12th term finishes up next year. The Gilson Republican announced at his annual picnic on Sunday that he isn't going to seek re-election next year.

That will bring an end to a career in politics that saw Moffitt serve in a variety of roles, including Mayor of Oneida and Knox County Treasurer.

Moffitt said he wants to spend more time with family.

“Our youngest daughter was 7 years old when I was first elected to the House. And now we have a granddaughter who’s 8 years old. It’s gone a whole generation,” Moffitt said.

Moffitt plans to help on his son’s farm and travel with his wife once his days in Springfield are over. The 68-year-old felt he’s done a lot in his time as a State Representative. He said some of his biggest accomplishments include being a sponsor of the Genetic Information Privacy Act, and securing funding for overpass projects in Galesburg.

But he said there’s still a lot of work to do with a year and a half to go in his final term.

“I’d like to see an improved or continued expansion of revenue streams for the fire service and all emergency services to help get equipment for fire, EMS, and law enforcement on certain things,” Moffitt said.

Moffitt said there were some regrets over ideas and proposals that were never passed. He said that includes redistricting reform and an inability to make the state budget public prior to a vote.
