The Western Illinois Regional Council is hosting the Kathy Simmons 5K next month in support of domestic violence victims.
Diane Mayfield, Victim Services Director for the WIRC, said this is the third year for the event and it's open to anyone who would like to participate.
“It’s a walk, a run, and a roll. And that includes anything on wheels other than bicycles. Kids can come with parents and ride a scooter as mom and dad walk along, or it might be someone in a wheelchair. We want to include everybody,” Mayfield said.
She said all proceeds from the 5K will assist domestic violence victims in ways that traditional funding can’t.
“It might be that a victim needs a car repair in order to keep going back and forth to work to support her and her children. Things like this that might be a little difficult for them to scrape some money together to keep going,” Mayfield said.
Mayfield said the 5K is in honor of Kathy Simmons of Burnside, who lost her life to domestic violence in 2003.
Mayfield said close to 10 people participated last year, and organizers hope to top that mark this time around.
The race will begin at 8 AM on Saturday, May 7 at Citizen’s Bank Plaza in downtown Macomb. Registration is $35.
