The Iowa State Penitentiary says one of its minimum security inmates was captured shortly after walking away from his work detail in Fort Madison. Robert Juhl II was taken into custody after stealing a car.
ISP Spokeswoman Rebecca Bowker said Juhl was working Wednesday on the west end of the city, but did not provide an exact location. She also did not disclose what job he was doing or how many were on his crew, which he joined March 31.
These minimum security crews usually work in Keokuk or Fort Madison on anything from landscaping to mowing grass. The city generally provides someone to supervise them.
Juhl is alleged to have walked across the street and stole the car. He was arrested about 12:3o P.M. Wednesday south of the city on Highway 61. He's charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle without Owners Consent and Driving While Barred.
Juhl is serving a four-year sentence in the minimum security unit for burglary and driving while barred in Johnson County. The Iowa Department of Corrections website states that Juhl's tentative discharge datewas May 30, 2018.
