A lengthy law enforcement career is coming to an end in Galesburg. Police Chief David Christensen said he will retire soon.
He worked for the department for 36 years, starting as a patrol officer in 1982. He has been chief for the last 13 years.
Christensen has not set a retirement date. He said he will try to align it with the start date for his successor.
City leaders said they will conduct a nationwide search and will also consider internal candidates. They expect to begin the process next month and wrap up the search in August, with the new chief starting in the fall.

This is the second announced retirement of a police chief from the tri states in less than two weeks.
Fort Madison Chief Tim Sittig will step down May 31 after more than 30 years in law enforcement. He was chief for three years.
Fort Madison will soon start the search for Sittig’s replacement.
