Nearly a Dozen Applicants for West Burlington Superintendent

The West Burlington School District is receiving interest in its vacant superintendent position.  School Board President Andy Crowner said this week that ten people have applied for the job.

He said the firm leading the search for the district anticipates another 5-10 candidates could apply before the application deadline at the end of next week.

Crowner said the district's next superintendent should have a solid understanding of education funding in Iowa and of the state’s open enrollment laws. He said he would also like someone who understands the challenges facing at-risk students.

“We are in an area with economic downturn,” said Crowner. “Our free and reduced lunch program is fairly high so being able to understand that and work with students more at-risk in our area is very important to us.”

Crowner said the school board hopes to identify a handful of semifinalists before the end of the month.

The district is seeking a replacement for Dave Schmitt, who resigned in March, citing health concerns.

Former Fort Madison School Superintendent Ken Marang is serving as interim superintendent. Crowner said Marang’s contract could be extended beyond June 30 if the district does not find the right candidate for the post.
