ISP District 14 Commander John Dively said Troy Chism, 39, was one of four Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputies to arrive at a home in rural Avon at about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in response to a battery and disturbance call. Dively said Chism was shot by the suspect, who subsequently barricaded himself in the home until 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

No other injuries were reported.

Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard said during a news conference that Chism joined the force 4 ½ years ago. He was also a paramedic and a member of several local law enforcement response teams.

“I stand before you today saddened and at a loss for words to express the grief we are feeling,” said Standard. “Troy Chism dedicated his life to serving this community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”

The ISP said more than a dozen agencies from throughout west-central Illinois responded to the shooting, including ISP’s own SWAT personnel and crisis negotiators.
