Emily Sutton has resigned from the board. The Illinois Supreme Court last month appointed Sutton to serve as a judge in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. She was sworn in last week.
School District Superintendent Patrick Twomey said, “Right in the state constitution it specifically says a district judge cannot hold a school board seat. And once I thought about it, it really makes sense because so much stuff from schools goes through the courts.”

Twomey said the school board will have 45 days to appoint a new member. He said the board will accept applications through September 13. He said board members could then discuss the applicants during a closed door meeting following their public meeting on September 16.
Voters elected Sutton to her first term on the school board in April of this year.
Twomey said the person chosen to replace her will fill the remainder of Sutton’s term, which runs through April, 2023.
