Ben Ellefritz, the campus pastor at The Crossing in Macomb, said he heard too many negative conversations about the community in the past year. He wanted to change the narrative so he came up with the idea for the #ForMacomb day of service, which will be held Saturday, September 28.
“This became a passion area for me to lead a charge that gets people talking about the great things instead of maybe the things that aren’t so positive,” Ellefritz said.
“What if for one day we could change what people were talking about? (What if) we got people refocused, recalibrated, and talked about the great people of Macomb and the great things that go on here?”
Mayor Mike Inman concurred. “This whole idea of #ForMacomb is right on. It’s the right narrative that we need to be getting out at the right time.”
Around 300 volunteers have already signed up, according to Ellefritz. He said you can sign up and learn more details on the #ForMacomb event pageas well as its Facebook and Instagram pages.
Ellefritz said volunteer opportunities include cleaning parks and streets, building bookshelves for the school district, and working with residents of senior living facilities.
He said the day of service will wrap up with a community barbeque at Chandler Park.
“We’re getting everybody that we believe has the same heartbeat for Macomb together to share a meal (and) to share conversations.”
