Three Central Illinois cannabis dispensaries plan to open New Year's Day as the state's new recreational marijuana law goes into effect. But you might not be able to smoke what you buy.
Trinity Compassionate Care Center in Peoria will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1. The dispensary said while they won't have any cannabis flower in supply for recreational customers, infused and concentrated products will be available in limited quantities. Medical customers can enter through a different door.
The former Salveo Health and Wellness is now known as Rise Canton. General manager Scott Miller said the dispensary opens at 7 a.m. Sales begin at 8 a.m. He said he expects a lot of education on day 1. Miller said medical patients will get priority. He expects plenty of consumables, but said there may be a flower shortage for recreational users.
NuMed Dispensary in East Peoria will open at 6 a.m.
All three are already medical cannabis dispensaries. The Nature's Treatment of Illinois recreational-only dispensary in Galesburg isn't set to open by Jan. 1.
Starting Wednesday, adults 21 and older can legally possess up a combination of up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, cannabis infused products with up to 500 milligrams of THC, or five grams of cannabis concentrate. Cannabis must be transported in a sealed, odor-proof and child-proof container. In most municipalities, cannabis usage is allowed only on private property out of public view.
Tazewell County Sheriff Jeff Lower said people under the influence of cannabis should "be smart" and avoid getting behind the wheel. He also asked people to be respectful of their neighbors when using marijuana or cannabis-infused products.
Cannabis can only be purchased with cash.
