Sorensen is a native of Rockford who worked as a meteorologist for 11 years at WREX-tv in Rockford, and 7 years at WQAD-tv, Channel 8, in the Quad Cities. He says he'll use his expertise as a climate communicator to fight for Illinoisans on environmental justice and more in Washington.

Litesa Wallace attended Western Illinois University and received her Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University in Educational Psychology. She has worked as an educator and an activist, co-founding the Rockford Anti-Racism Network, and served three terms in the Illinois House.

Already in the race for the Democratic nomination are Rock Island County Board member Angie Normoyle and Rockford alderman Jonathan Logemann.

Illinois' 17th district is currently represented by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos of Moline who's going to retire next year.
