Monmouth police say Romel Gilliam, 26, of Milan, died after being shot in the 300 block of South Ninth Street on Monday evening in Monmouth.

A Monmouth teen is in the Warren County jail on first-degree murder charges after a shooting this week.

Spencer L. Sage, 18, of Monmouth, turned himself in to authorities late Wednesday, according to Monmouth police.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of South Ninth Street.

The victim, Romel M. Gilliam, 26, of Milan, was taken to OSF Holy Family Medical Center, where he later died.

Sage appeared in Warren County court on Thursday and was appointed a public defender.

Bond was set at $500,000.

This is the second act of gun violence involving teens in Monmouth in recent months.

Cayden Bell, 19, and Nathan Perez, 18, are charged with attempted murder in the April 2 shooting of Brock Noles, 21, of Monmouth.

Both have pleaded not guilty in Warren County court.

That shooting occurred at Fifth Street and Broadway Avenue.

Noles was hospitalized with injuries and later released.

Then, on May 12, Noles was arrested after authorities responded to a home invasion with a firearm involved south of Monmouth.

Noles is charged with home invasion, criminal damage to property, and aggravated assault.
