Man killed in officer-involved shooting identified

Illinois State Police have identified the person killed in an officer-involved shooting in Hancock County as Timothy Ostrander, 31, of Muscatine, Iowa.

The shooting happened on the afternoon of July 13 after a Hancock County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a suspicious person.

According to state police, Ostrander entered the deputy’s patrol vehicle and held the deputy at gunpoint.

The deputy then got out of the vehicle and fired shots at Ostrander.

By then, another Hancock County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on scene and picked up the first deputy, while Ostrander fled in the patrol vehicle.

A short pursuit ended near U.S. Route 136 and County Road 2500 East with an exchange of gunfire. Ostrander was struck and taken to an area hospital, where he died a short time later.

The deputies involved in the shooting have not been identified. Neither was injured, according to state police.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
