“It’s fun. I’ve found my fellow master gardeners to be people with a good sense of humor, and I always learned a lot and also had a lot of fun,” she said.

Krell-Andre said the day-long educational event is open to gardening experts and novices alike.

The schedule:

  • 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Registration
  • 9:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Keynote - Steven Eilers "The Top 10 Mistakes Gardeners Make"

  • 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. Lunch
  • 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Keynote - Adam Janke "Bringing Nature Home: Native Plants and Their Ecological, Cultural and Aesthetic Value"
  • 1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. Breakout Session 2

Krell-Andre said the breakouts will includes sessions on topics such as monarch butterflies, organic vegetable gardening, growing a cut flower garden, and photographing wildflowers.
“We’re looking forward to it. We feel like we have some really good presenters, some good classes, and a nice variety,” she said.

She said everyone who attends will receive succulents and the materials for making a planter for them.

The gardening seminar will be held Saturday, March 4, at the Southeastern Community College campus in West Burlington. But the registration deadline is coming up this Monday, Feb. 13.

You can sign up on the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach website.

The $40 fee includes lunch.
