The decomposed body was found in the storage unit on Oct. 7 after a report of a suspicious odor.

The decomposed body found in a Maquon storage unit last fall has officially been identified as the village’s former police chief.

Richard R. Young was 71.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office received confirmation Tuesday, after a lengthy process to extract DNA from the decomposed remains and compare it to samples from family members.

Young’s remains were discovered on Oct. 7, 2022 in a storage unit at 114 E. 3rd St. in Maquon after a report of a suspicious odor.

The Sheriff’s Office is notifying Young’s family of the positive identification.

Marcy L. Oglesby, 50, of Maquon was initially charged with felony concealment of death in the case.

In February, prosecutors filed amended charges including murder, aggravated battery by administering a toxic substance, and concealment of homicide.

They say Oglesby poisoned Young with eye drops and other medications and then hid his body in the storage unit.

However, Ninth Circuit Judge Andrew Doyle granted a defense motion on March 16 to dismiss the amended charges over concerns Oglesby’s right to a speedy trial was being violated.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin has filed an appeal with the Fourth District Appellate Court in Springfield.

The case has been received by the appellate court, according to online court records.

Oglesby remains in custody at the Knox County jail on the initial charges.
