Macomb school board set for next two years

The Macomb School District this week swore in the winners of this month’s board elections.

They are incumbent Emily Sutton and newcomers Robin Severs and Kristin Terry. They joined board members Jill Myers, Jim LaPrad, Kishor Kapale, and Larry Adams.

The new board chose its officers for the next two years.

Myers will continue to serve as president.

Sutton is the new vice president.

Galesburg tables Rescue Mission purchase

The Galesburg city council tabled a vote on buying property that could become a permanent homeless shelter.

The Galesburg Rescue Mission bought the former Nielson School on Farnham Street and is moving operations there this summer.

City staff is now recommending buying the former Rescue Mission property on East Third Street for $350,000.

That’s after partnering with local agencies the past two years to provide winter warming shelters for the homeless at two different locations.

The idea is that the Rescue Mission would be a permanent site for a shelter in cooperation with other agencies, but there’s not a plan in place yet.

The council approved his motion to table the purchase on a 4-3 vote. It will come up for again at the next council meeting in May, after newly elected council members are seated.

DCI investigating Fairfield train death

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting the Fairfield Police Department with a train-related death investigation.

The body of Cortney Heather Haynes, 30, of Fairfield was found at the 23rd Street railroad crossing.

She was declared dead at the scene.

Her injuries were consistent with being hit by a moving train.

Anyone with information about Haynes’ death is asked to call Fairfield police.

Arrest made in Burlington shooting

Burlington police have made an arrest in a March 24 shooting in the 1400 block of Division Street that wounded two people.

Kejonte King, 19, was taken into custody in Cedar Rapids with the assistance of U.S Marshals.

King is charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, armed intent, possession of a firearm by a felon, and two counts of willful injury.

The two victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
