Monmouth College president retiring

Monmouth College’s president has announced he will retire at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Clarence Wyatt became the college’s 14th president in 2014.

He came to Monmouth from Centre College in Kentucky, where he was a history professor and administrator.

A national search for the college’s next president will begin this summer.

Good Hope home destroyed in fire

A Good Hope home was declared a total loss after a fire.

Firefighters responded to the two-story home on the evening of April 22 and found it engulfed in flames.

Several other fire departments and agencies were called in to assist the Good Hope-Sciota Fire Protection District.

No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Ameren replacing old pipelines in Macomb

Ameren Illinois will be busy in Macomb for the next few months.

Ameren will replace steel pipelines with ones made of polyethylene material, which the utility said is corrosion-resistant.

The old pipelines are from the 1960s.

The work will be done in the northwest part of Macomb:

· Phase 1 – Construction work will begin in May on University Drive, West Kurlene Drive, Penny Lane, and the south portion of Jana Road

· Phase 2 – Work will be done beginning in June on the north portion of Jana Road and long Hickory Bow

Weather permitting, the project should be completed by early August.

Ameren said it awarded the job to a diverse contractor, InterCon Construction, a woman-owned business.

Knox County approves contract for new website

The Knox County Board has approved a $30,000 contract to build a new website for the county.

The contract is with Revize, a Michigan-based company that has created websites for a number of Illinois municipalities, including the city of Galesburg.

The goal is to make a more navigable website for Knox County residents.

The county will also pay a yearly maintenance fee for the new website.

Legionnaire’s Disease at veterans’ home in Quincy

There is a confirmed case of Legionnaire’s Disease at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy.

The state said this is an isolated case, and that the person who contracted the disease experienced very mild symptoms and is recovering.

State officials also said that out of an abundance of caution, the home’s residents will be monitored closely for at least the next two weeks.

More than a dozen deaths at the home were attributed to a Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak seven years ago.

The state is building a nearly $300 million replacement facility.

Construction is scheduled to be completed early next year.

Bridge work in Henderson County

The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin repairs on Illinois 96 bridges west of Lomax in Henderson County on Monday, May 1.

The work will be on the bridges over Camp and Weaver creeks. It will reduce traffic to one lane controlled by temporary signals into September.
