Plea deal reached in fatal Grand Avenue shooting

A 34-year-old Galesburg man pleaded guilty to amended charges of second-degree murder in a July 2022 shooting on Grand Avenue in Galesburg.

Per a plea agreement reached Monday morning in Knox County Circuit Court, Asheem M. Afutu will serve 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for fatally shooting Gregory L.Tucker, 33.

Police were notified of the shooting in the early morning hours of July 24, 2022, when Tucker was taken to OSF St. Mary Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head.

Tucker was in the passenger seat of a vehicle in an empty lot in the 2100 block Grand Avenue when he was shot.

A verbal altercation led to the shooting.

A warrant was issued for Afutu’s arrest two days later.

He was arrested in Florida in October and extradited to Knox County, where he was initially charged with first degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Afutu will get credit for 216 days served in the Knox County jail and must go through a substance abuse program, per the plea agreement.

He will also be subject to two years of parole following his release from prison.
