Two area nursing homes have each been fined $25,000 by the Illinois Department of Public Health over licensure violations.
IDPH’s 2023 first quarter report details the Type A violations for Macomb Acute Care Center, 8 Doctors Lane in Macomb, and Prairie City Rehab, 825 E. Main St. in Prairie City.
Type A violations are for incidents with substantial probability of death or serious mental or physical harm.
Macomb Acute Care Center The fine for the Macomb Acute Care Center stems from an employee failing to properly secure a wheelchair-bound resident in a van.
The employee was transporting the resident to a parade last fall.
According to the report, the resident slid out of the wheelchair onto the floor of the van when the employee hit a bump in the road. The resident was wearing the upper part of the seatbelt, but not the lap belt.
The resident suffered a fractured leg and hip in the fall and required hip surgery.
Investigators also found the employee did not have permission from a supervisor to transport the resident.
The facility failed to provide the necessary care to maintain the highest practicable well-being of the resident and failed to ensure the resident’s environment was free of hazards, according to the report.
Prairie City Rehab Prairie City Rehab was fined over the care of a resident recently diagnosed with seizures.
Investigators found the facility’s employees failed to give a resident medication prescribed to treat the seizures and failed to ensure the resident’s environment was free of hazards.
According to the report, that resulted in the resident falling three times in December 2022.
The resident suffered bleeding around the brain and multiple fractured ribs.
