Wayne Carl has given the city of Galesburg 30 days notice.
He has been serving as interim city manager since the beginning of July, after the departure of Gerald Smith, who served as city manager for less than a year.
Carl told TSPR he is leaving for personal reasons.
He also served as interim last year, between the time Todd Thompson left and Smith was hired.
He retired this spring, but then came back to serve as interim again.
He was first hired by the city as an engineer in 2001 and became public works director in 2015.
Mayor Peter Schwartzman confirmed Carl’s impending departure.
A search for a city manager is underway, but Schwartzman said the city won’t have someone hired by the time Carl leaves.
Schwartzman said the city has had a lot of “moving parts” since a new council was seated in May.
At the first meeting of the new council, the contract for an interim public works director was not extended.
The following month, Smith reached a separation agreement with the city.
“It has been tough on morale and workload. I feel for all city employees,” Schwartzman said. “Things will get straightened out soon, I hope, but it is a hard time to find top-level employees.”
Schwartzman said he believes interviews for the city manager will begin in September and the search should be complete by late October or early November.
