The Galesburg city council will be asked on Monday to approve an employment agreement with Eric Hanson to serve as the community’s next city manager.

Hanson is currently the assistant city manager in Normal, a position he’s held the past four years.

Hanson is already familiar with western Illinois. He is a graduate of Monmouth College, and later served as Monmouth’s city administrator for five years before leaving in 2012 to become the city manager of Indianola, Iowa.

He’s also been city manager in Ballwin, Missouri.

Hanson will take office in Galesburg on Dec. 11.

Galesburg chose Hanson after conducting a national search to replace Gerald Smith, who left in June after seven months on the job.

Several people have served temporarily in the city manager’s office since then.

Community Development Director Steve Gugliotta was acting city manager before retired public works director Wayne Carl stepped in to serve as interim city manager.

After Carl stepped down, retired police chief John Schlaf agreed to be interim city manager, a role he will continue until Hanson arrives.
